PARTS IS PARTS....

Pictured below is my gun after I finished it up.  Scroll down and you will see the pictures of it when it was in progress.  It took me most of a year, but I work when I can get an hour or two here and there.  I am very, very pleased with this gun.  Maybe I got lucky on this one.  I am already working on another Caspian frame and parts.  It was a rewarding experience.  I have about a thousand rounds through this one.  No problems yet.  And it is really fun to show it off.  I take pride in something that I built myself.  Pulling the trigger is alot of fun too!!

Here is a picture of the back end.  I do like beavertails, but I wanted this gun to be simple, and easier to put together.  I also like the clean lines.  The grip safety on this gun is a factory unit off of a Colt Commander.  It dropped right in.

I put the picture below in just so that you could see the blue job in different light.  This was taken in my kitchen and the lights are very bright.  I was very pleased with the bluing.  The only mark that I have put on it is a light rub mark from another slide that I put on this frame once.  Boy that was a mistake.  Once you have your baby blued, don't mix and match slides.  Still, it's a tiny mark.  I also don't carry this gun in a holster so I can't comment on blue wear there.

This is my first Caspian frame that I built up in 2007.  It features a Kimber/Bul slide.  Further down the page is a list of the parts that I used on this gun.  The amazin thing to me is how well is shoots and how reliable it has been.  I got lucky on this one.  Isn't it a beauty?!

Here is the assmebled monster before bluing.  The gun has a cheapo Ebay trigger in this photo.  In the photo above you can see a Greider trigger.  They make very nice triggers.  I also like the Cylinder and slide triggers.  Most all triggers require some slight fitting to get them to drop in.  If they DON'T require fitting, you will have some verticle play or movement.  Removing a small amount of material (like only .001 at a time) and then check, fit, check etc.  If you take off too much material, it will not have a nice snug fit.   Sharpie works good to mark the trigger top and bottom.  Then reinstall and you can see marks in the sharpie where it is making contact.  Try to keep the work surfaces absolutely flat and parallel.  I start out with a file (careful!) then move to fine sand paper.  I put the sand paper on a flat surface and drag the trigger across the sane paper.  The trigger "track" in the frame can be smoothed out with a piece of sand paper wrapped around a small fileor a piece of wood that fits into the track.  You can buy stones that fit the track if you desire to have the best tools available.I finish when the trigger is just slightly dragging.  Then I "shoot" the trigger in.

Here is the slide just as I bought it at the 2007 Shot Show from Bul. It was pretty much ready to run except that it lacked final finish work.  One thing that I have never liked about Kimber slides is that they tend to have a pebble grain finish, which I find to be less than attractive.  One more thing about Kimber slides is that they do or at least did have their own proprietary sight cut.  I picked up a Yost professional rear sight back when they were making their own sights and offering one for Kimbers.  The front sight in most of the photos is a Kimber take off.  I now have a Novak night sight on the front of the gun.

The slide hung off of the end of the frame about 1/16 of an inch or so.  The gun test fired fine at this point, so I had to just file and sand until it all looked pretty.

I traded a set of grips for this barrel and it was a good trade I must say.  It is a used Springfield Armory and it dropped right in. It is stainless and shoots great.  I have at least 12-1500 rounds through this gun now.

This is a real basic rundown for this gun.  The XXXXXXXX company prices reflect my discount and are all from 2007.

Obviously, if you just want to own a 1911, you can save a few bucks by buying one off the shelf. However, if you are the type of person who likes to tinker, and enjoy the pleasure of seeing what you can do with your own hands, dive in. It is impossible to put a price on the fun that I have had putting this gun together. It took at least 9 or 10 months, what can I say, I am a busy guy!  The Caspian frames get my endorsement for a quality made piece of gear. I also have had success with the two or three (recently made) Essex frames that I have worked on. I advise spending as much as you can on the parts.   I have sent some "cheaply priced and cheaply made" parts back to the parts store. I was very happy with the Bul ignition parts. I bought them on a whim at the Shot Show for $20 (parts numbers above for reference only).  Any questions?
